In the Mamluk period the church was in hands of Georgians.〔Janin, 1913. 34.〕〔Moore, 1961. 60.〕 Franciscans paid the Georgians rent for the building and adjacent garden.〔Papadopoulous-Kerameous 189, iv. 444. 446.〕 The Georgians made a final attempt to regain the monastery by legal means in 1596.〔Hussein, Sclad and Gosselin, 1934, 123-5. 88.〕 The monastery celebrates the childhood wanderings of John the Baptist in this region.
